Writing Training
for Paralegals
and Legal Assistants
Rick Has a Few Questions for You – and a Possible Answer.
You're committed to continuing legal education.

You're committed to training. To getting the best out of everyone in your shop.

But what about your paralegals? What about your legal assistants? Are you offering them the kinds of help they need to do a better job of helping your lawyers?

Writing, for instance.

I’ve just completed my third round of special legal-writing workshops hosted by the DC Bar, and designed specifically for paralegals and legal assistants.

Yes, we cover many of the same writing and editing fundamentals I discuss with lawyers across the country – clarity, brevity, organization, tone, better awareness of different audiences, less reliance on legalese, etc. But there’s also a particular emphasis on dealing with the peculiar stresses of the collaborative writing process – what I like to call “Writing as a Team Sport.”

I’ve been able to draw on different aspects of my experience – as a lawyer, a congressional speechwriter, a ghostwriter, a book editor, and a syndicated columnist and TV commentator.

I’ve served at multiple locations in the writing/editing pipeline – writing as myself with my own name and face right out front, and writing more or less invisibly behind the scenes. I’ve had my work edited, and I’ve edited the work of others. And what I’ve learned in each of those roles turns out to be quite useful for those writers who don’t always have the final say – and even for those who supervise them.

Can you see the potential benefits of a practical, lively, even entertaining program for these vital members of your team? You can make that happen.

presenter/teacher/professor rarely has both. The material presented is going to be very helpful for me moving forward.”

“I liked how the presenter tried to make the content relevant to individuals in
our roles as paralegals. He was very insightful regarding the challenges
paralegals face when drafting legal documents and he put forth innovative
solutions.”

“Rick did a fabulous job presenting a potentially dry topic in an engaging and
interactive way. He has a clever talent for incorporating non-legal examples to
reinforce key points (e.g., quotations from artists and media publications as
writing samples). I also really appreciated the practical tools he shared for
improving legal writing.”
